Abstract

Information and communication technologies has produced great contributions to aid visually impaired peopled by allowing them free locomotion and navigation using various electronic travel aid devices. In this paper we aim to aid visually impaired people by detecting and estimating crowd and offer them free mobility in an indoor environment. Previously, the electronic travel aid devices available were found to be highly directional and limited to shorter distance obstacle detection. These devices are incapable of alerting visually impaired person about the speed and the distance of people around forming crowd. Our approach overcomes these shortcomings by providing information of both speed and distance of the crowd. We utilize wireless body area network to detect and estimate the crowd and alert the visually impaired person accordingly. We propose a methodology to determine crowd condition based on the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) and acceleration. We have deployed a test bed to evaluate our approach
